Theotokos Eleovritisa
Holy Monastery of Vatopedi
The icon of Panagia Eleovritisa holds a revered place in the heart of the monastery, enshrined within its container or storage area. The unique title "Eleovritisa" is intertwined with a notable miracle attributed to the providence of the Virgin Mary.
During a time of scarcity, the monastery found itself in dire shortage of olive oil. Monk Gennadios, responsible as the potter and possibly the storekeeper, distributed oil strictly for the liturgical needs of the church in an effort to conserve the precious resource. The monastery's cook, perturbed by this rationing, took his concerns to the abbot. With unwavering faith in the Virgin Mary's benevolence and provision, the abbot instructed that the oil be also given for the sustenance of the brotherhood, trusting in divine providence.
To the astonishment of Monk Gennadios, upon one of his subsequent visits to the storage area, he discovered the olive oil miraculously overflowing, its level rising to reach the doorway. This inexplicable abundance affirmed the monastery's faith in the intercession and blessings of the Virgin Mary.
In recognition of his virtuous life and the miracle associated with him, the monastery venerates Monk Gennadios with the honor of sainthood. The tale of the Panagia Eleovritisa continues to inspire, serving as a testament to the miracles that stem from unwavering faith and divine grace.
