Chickpea stew (chickpea yiahni)
Chickpea stew or yachni is a delicious, filling and fasting dish that Orthodox monks make during fasting, as it is not only filling but also nutritious. Try this delicious dish from Mount Athos for yourself and be amazed.
We soak the chickpeas from the night before.
In the morning, we drain the water and mix them with soda.
We leave them for an hour.
Then, we wash them very well and rub them to remove the skins.
We boil them with a little water on low heat.
We finely chop the onion.
We put a little oil in a pan.
We sauté the onion in the oil.
We add the tomato paste and the rest of the ingredients.
Then, we add the ready chickpeas together with their broth.
When the liquids are absorbed, we withdraw from the fire.
If we have a pressure cooker, we can boil the chickpeas there.
Instead of red pepper we can use chili flakes.
