Fish are one of the main meals of the orthodox monks diet, and especially cod or codfish. Here is a cooking proposal, ideal for fish lovers and for days of catalysis when fish is permitted. An authentic monastic recipe from Mount Athos for steamed salt cod, simmered with onions in the pot or small traditional pan. Accompany your dish with French fries or potatoes in the pot.

Ingredients
Execution Method

We put the salted cod in the pan or pot.

We pour cold water until it is well covered.

We place it on high heat.

When it boils, we desalinate.

We add the chopped onions, garlic and oil.

When the water starts to rise, we add the oregano, pepper and lemon juice.

We lower the heat and wait for the sauce to thicken.

We shake the pan or pot every now and then, so that the food does not stick.

If desired, we garnish with chopped parsley or dill.

Tips
If we want, we can accompany our dish with baby potatoes or a nice salad.

We can make the cod with tomato sauce, as long as we add a tablespoon of tomato paste dissolved in a little water.
