An exceptional hand-painted icon of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa, created with reverence at the Holy Skete of Saint Anna on Mount Athos.
The Theotokos is depicted in a majestic full-length composition, tenderly holding the Christ Child in her arms. Their faces meet in an intimate gesture characteristic of the Glykophilousa iconographic type, expressing the profound bond between the Mother of God and the Divine Child.
The defining artistic feature of this icon is the extensive use of tsoukaniko throughout the entire gilded surface. The decoration is not limited to the halos. It extends across the burnished gold background and the elaborate surrounding border, where numerous geometric and floral motifs have been individually created using traditional hand tools.
The burnished gold surface enhances the depth and precision of the tsoukaniko decoration, changing in appearance as it interacts with the surrounding light. Deep shades of crimson, blue and green contrast with the richly decorated gold, giving the icon a monumental and commanding presence.
Standing 110 centimetres high, this icon is especially suitable for a private chapel, church, monastery guest room, prayer room or a prominent position within a residence.
This is not a print or mass-produced reproduction, but an individually hand-painted work of sacred iconography from Mount Athos.
