Who was Saint Phanourios?

In this icon, Saint Phanourios is depicted as a young man, dressed as a soldier, holding a cross and a candle. Around the icon were scenes showing his sufferings and martyrdom. For this reason, the Church honors him as a Great Martyr.
He is also often called Saint Phanourios the Newly-Revealed, because his veneration became known after the discovery of his icon.
From Rhodes, the honor of Saint Phanourios spread gradually to the surrounding islands and then throughout the Orthodox world. The faithful came to love him deeply and to call upon him whenever they needed something to be revealed.

A heavenly hymn is celebrated brightly upon the earth, and the angelic assembly now joyfully keeps an earthly feast. From above, they praise your struggles with hymns, while below, the Church proclaims the heavenly glory which you found through your labors and sufferings, O glorious Phanourios.
The Fanouropita tradition
The Fanouropita is a fasting cake prepared in honor of Saint Phanourios. It is usually made on the eve or on the day of his feast, but many faithful also prepare it at other times of the year when they are asking for the help and intercessions of the Saint.
The cake is taken to church, blessed by the priest, and then shared with the faithful.

Why do we make Fanouropita?
The Fanouropita is made as an offering in honor of Saint Phanourios. The faithful prepare it with reverence, bring it to church for the blessing prayer to be read, and then share it with others.
In some places, it is customary for the Fanouropita to have 7 or 9 ingredients. These numbers are part of local tradition, although recipes may vary from one region to another.
What matters most is not that every Fanouropita is exactly the same. What matters is that it is offered with faith, gratitude and a pure intention.
Traditional Fanouropita Recipe
Below is a simple fasting recipe for Fanouropita, suitable for the feast of Saint Phanourios or for any time a faithful person wishes to offer the cake with reverence and prayer.
Ingredients
- 1 cup olive oil
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. cloves
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. soda
- 500 g flour
- A little sesame (for garnish)
- A little almonds fillet
- Powder sugar (for serving)
Execution Method
- We dissolve the soda and baking powder in a little of the orange juice.
- We put the olive oil, orange juice, water, sugar in a bowl and beat them with a whisk until the sugar dissolves.
- We add the mixture with the soda, cinnamon and cloves to the bowl and homogenize.
- We slowly incorporate the flour, mixing gently.
- We sprinkle an oiled pan with sesame seeds and pour the mixture inside.
- We sprinkle again with the sesame and almonds and bake at 180 degrees in a preheated oven for about 50 minutes.
- When the fanouropita has cooled, cut it into 40 small pieces according to tradition.
- We serve with a little powdered sugar.
- Grease and flour a baking pan, or line it with parchment paper. Pour in the batter and bake in a preheated oven at 170°C for about 45–55 minutes, depending on your oven.
The Fanouropita is ready when a knife or skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow it to cool. If desired, sprinkle with a little powdered sugar before serving.
When do we bring the Fanouropita to church?
The Fanouropita is usually brought to church on the eve or the day of the feast of Saint Phanourios, on August 26 or August 27.
However, it may also be offered at other times of the year, whenever someone wishes to honor the Saint and ask for his intercessions.
It is always best to speak with your parish priest and ask when the blessing of the Fanouropita can be read.
What do we say when we share Fanouropita?
When the Fanouropita is shared, many people say:
