When looking for the best frankincense for home use, it is important to choose a scent that aids focus without being overwhelming. Mount Athos varieties like Byzantine Lily, Myrrh, or Night Flower are ideal. Their aroma lingers for hours, recreating the sanctified atmosphere of an Orthodox Temple within your own home.
Since incense is offered as a sacrifice of spiritual fragrance, its remains are considered blessed. The proper way to dispose of incense ash and unburned resin is to place them in a clean, undisturbed natural spot: in the sea, a river, or your garden soil or flower pots, away from areas where people walk or where trash is kept.
The most common incense prayer is: Let my prayer arise in Thy sight as incense... Alternatively, as you cense your icons and your home, the Fathers encourage us to say the Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.
To burn incense with charcoal, first hold a charcoal tablet with tongs and light it until it starts to spark. Place the charcoal in a heat-resistant burner filled with sand or stones. Wait about 1 to 2 minutes until the charcoal is covered in grey ash and glowing red. Then place a few small pieces of Athonite resin incense on top. The heat will slowly release the fragrance.
