A Mount Athos prayer rope is a sacred "ergocheiron" (handicraft) created by monks on the Holy Mountain in an atmosphere of unceasing prayer. Each knot is intricately tied while the monk recites the Jesus Prayer, making the object a vessel of blessing and a centuries-old tradition. Traditionally, a prayer rope is worn on the left wrist to keep the right hand free for making the Sign of the Cross. It should be worn with humility and not as a decorative piece of jewelry.
